Resilient Irrigation Solutions for a Water-Scarce Europe | RAINS

Jan 9, 2026 | Projects

NMP Global Innovation is proud to support and promote impactful EU-funded initiatives that address some of the most pressing challenges facing our region today. One such initiative is RAINS, a project in which our direct client Atlantis Consulting participates as a key partner, contributing expertise toward sustainable, climate-resilient agriculture.

As climate change increasingly affects Europe’s farmers through droughts, floods, and extreme weather, RAINS is delivering practical, tested solutions that help agriculture adapt and thrive. The project demonstrates how innovation, collaboration, and real-world application can lead to more efficient use of water and fertilisers, improved soil resilience, and long-term sustainability across the Mediterranean and the wider EU.

The RAINS project is developing and testing 10 practical solutions to help agriculture adapt, from alternative water sources like fog harvesting and reclaimed wastewater to smart irrigation tools such as WaterIQ and Optifangs-IA.

Across 10 demonstration sites in Spain and Greece, RAINS is improving water efficiency, nutrient management, and soil resilience, helping farmers use water and fertilisers more sustainably.

By 2050, RAINS aims to:
💧 Improve water efficiency by 50% on 12,700 hectares
🚜 Support 500+ farmers
🌍 Save €6.1 billion, 244 million litres of water, and 35 tonnes of CO₂

Coordinated by SAV and involving 17 partners across 6 countries, RAINS demonstrates what works on the ground in the Mediterranean, the EU’s most drought-prone region, setting a credible pathway to help farmers use water and fertilisers more efficiently and sustainably, while influencing agricultural policies and farming practices across the EU.
